A sprawling, lush carpet of thick, green grass is as much a part of the American Dream as white picket fences, cul-de-sacs, and minivans with built-in DVD players. When everything is right, lawns look awesome.
For easily-accessible outdoor entertainment space, it’s hard to beat a deck. As a rule, decks typically feel more like a part of the house than a part of the garden. But if you have a deck, there’s probably no better vantage point from which to view your garden… and there may be no part of your outdoor space where you spend more time.
My daughter came home from kindergarten announcing that we needed a vegetable garden. The class had dropped a few seeds in some plastic cups and set them on the windowsill. A few days later, I’d been recruited to become Farmer Brown.
So you finally created that perfect little spot in the backyard, just in time for summer. Maybe it is a big flagstone patio for parties, maybe it is a brand new deck, or maybe a cozy little terrace made from tumbled pavers. Looks great. Lots of room. Nice seating. Can’t wait to use it. But isn’t something missing?
New or neglected lawns can be a problem that’s easy to acknowledge but tough to fix. Sometimes the challenges are so great that homeowners feel helpless to make a difference. These folks want a well landscaped yard but don’t know where to start.
With the continued growth in population throughout our country, many wildlife species face increasing pressure from lack of natural habitat—the number one threat to wildlife today. So creating welcoming places for these wonderful creatures in your yard—no matter how small—will help…
The first thing of course is the seed. I use “Daneli Seeds, Anchorage”, which has a cabbage called OS Hybrid Cross. We grow much larger cabbages in Alaska because of the long, long hrs of daylight…20 hrs of direct sun in June!
One of the main reasons a lot of us do not spend more time outside is the heat. No matter how great your yard is, who wants to go hang out and get battered by the blazing hot sun? Shade is a necessity for any landscape that’s meant to be enjoyed. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that there’s a part of your yard right now that you would use more often… if only there was some shade overhead.
