I cut the plastic longer than the raised bed so I could close it up and anchor it with whatever I could find. We have had 20 degree weather and 30mph wind. It is doing fine. I used 4\' rebar pounded in the ground and 1/2in conduit over the rebar and then arched to the other side and slid it over the other rebar stake. Did this every 3\' or so as long as you want it. In between the rows, I will be putting newspaper down (1/2 inch thick) and grass clippings on top to keep the weeds from growing. The milk jugs are filled with water which heats up during the day and helps keep it warm in there during the night. -
My raised bed is made with landscape brick. It will last longer than wood. When I put the plastic over the frame and anchor it to the ground, the bricks heat up and help carry the heat through my cold Wisconsin nights. This is the hoop house garden in June. I kept the hoop house up all season, but kept the ends open for circulation. -
The experiment was no over head watering, not even rain. The plants did not get the blight or fungus. I have a rain barrel that I used for watering everything in the hoop house. -
I did not use any chemicals. I used companion planting to control insects. I used worm castings and worm tea to fertilize all veggies and herbs. If you like gardening come and join my forum www.larksperennials.com
