WHAT HERBS ARE YOU PLANTING THIS SPRING?

Every year I decide to try a new herb. This year mine will be BORAGE. It has a very pretty BLUE flower and the young foliage has a cucumber taste. Have any of you grown it? Any advice for me? As with all herbs REMEMBER TO DEADHEAD if you don't want ALOT of reseeds. I will let a few go to seed and collect the remaining. My last years favorite was LEMON VERBENA. I brought the plant in for the Winter (I am in Wisconsin) and let it go dormant, watering it very little. I use it for tea. Let's chat about your favorites. Smiles, Lark

Re: WHAT HERBS ARE YOU PLANTING THIS SPRING?

UPDATE: I planted borage seed on 3-17 and put them in my south facing windows. I put the pots in a baggie to form a little greenhouse. I have them placed on a heating pad (low setting) at night. It stays moist and warm. They are up and going strong. I googled companion planting and it said borage is good planted with cucumbers, tomatoes. They said it produces higher yield. We'll see!

I am planning on trying borage for the first time this year as well. I have read that it's great for companion planting so I thought I would give it a try. I read that it can get huge and tip over, but I have no experience with it so I'm not sure. I have never really had a full veggie garden before so most of the things that I'm planting will be new to me. I'm pretty excited about it!

I started my borage from seed the first week in March. I then transplanted it to a 4" pot. Last week I planted it in my raised veggie bed that I have a hoophouse over the top. I use the hoophouse to keep these veggies warm...I am in zone 4/5 and my tomatoes, beans and borage would freeze. They are doing great.

I planted lovage. It smells like celery. Tall plant with really neat flowers.

I planted spearmint and chocolate mint. Whoa are those spreading!

I planted corriander for the beneficial insects. I don't really like the smell or it, but I use the seed.

I like the smell of dill and have that in my yard as well as chives.

I DID have catnip, but as you can guess the cats got to it.

Oh and evening primrose. I forgot I planted it till I recognized the flowers in the second year.

I have lemon thyme and lemon balm. Yes, I love the smell of lemon!

I have sage. I have stinging nettle.

For 2011 I am not sure yet what I will plant. I still have chia seed from last year to plant.

This year I planted thyme, fennel, sage, and sweet marjoram. The thyme died in the heat and drought, but the others are doing good. The sage has been my favorite.

Lemon Balm is part of the hardy mint family. It's no surprise that this yummy herb can tolerate the crazy days of early spring weather. When you plant it, remember that planting it in a container that is sunk into the ground, might be a smart move. Lemon balm will escape and grow everywhere if given the opportunity.
