    Re: tree in front yard

Problem with homes that have front doors not visible from the street have little curb appeal from an architectural standpoint. So you have to recreate the entry. So pull the actual entry to the front corner of the house by building a pergola from the front door to the corner of the house, extend the walkway across the lawn with a serpentine pathway. Create a planting bed on each side of the pathway to plant color. Plant two smaller trees (compared to the one you cut down) such as Flowering Plum or Pear staggered on each side of the path. Plant a hedge of something like Prunus carolina compacta or Podocarpus depending on your Plant Zone to define the entry and screen the neighbor's blank siding.

    Re: tree in front yard

Rest of place could either be planted to reinforce small-cottage-on-larger-estate effect produced by size relationship between tree and house, or tree could be removed and replaced by plantings all in scale with house. Since tree looks like octopus attacking house, the way it is structured might be best to remove it. Could be some actual structural issues within tree, apart from potentially unpleasant psychological effect - that last aspect depends on how you see it. Scene could also be interpreted as picturesque or romantic.
