Backyard from Scratch
A summer project that we barely finished before the rain came. I hired contractors to do the concrete and an electrician to wire the spa. My father-in-law and I built the bbq from scratch. Careful planning allowed us to have the cook and guests at different heights. We also built the arbor- check your city code and inform your neighbors of your plans- I did all the stonework and my wife and I did all the landscaping and irrigation. Bury those drip lines to avoid them becoming the dog's next toy.

When's the next BBQ Gehrke!?!?
Love all the stonework you did. It adds texture and warmth to the area. Where are you located? I can't imagine what happens to the bark in a rain storm. You have created an outstanding area for your family and friends.

I do this for a living and I have to say your hard work has paid off ... nice job.
Looks like a lot of hard work nVery nice
Nicely done! I really like the stonework on the retaining wall.
Your hard work paid off....enjoy!
Good question on the mortar...I used type S- but buy also pick up some clay and portland cement...I added just a little bit to each batch. Make sure you have a nice smooth batch of mortar- place enough on so that when you press the stone it squirts out the side- wiggle the stone back and forth to get a nice bond. Finally, work bottom to top, so the bottom stones help support the top ones.
Looks great!! what type of mortar did you use on your stone? I have some Eldorado I'm about to put on. Tried a few pieces with type "s" and they didn't seem to stick good enough. Want to come over and help with mine? =)
This took a long long time- glad it is all over.
Great back yard Gehrke. It looks like it was a ton of work.
